Many of Australia’s Roman Catholic clergy were born in Ireland. Others were the children of Irish parents. The church they formed was very like the one they experienced at home in Ireland. Since 1950, there has been large-scale immigration from Southern Europe, with the result that in many parts of Australia a large percentage of the parishioners were of Italian and Maltese descent. Yet control of the church remained in Irish Australian hands, with a resulting clash of cultures.
